My heart breaks for Moses in this story. He had come so far. He had endured so much. He had been so faithful. But then on the verge of the Promised Land he choked on the grace of God. He just couldn’t swallow it, and so he couldn’t deliver it.
Congregations, regardless of size, are heavy. Not just heavy like a big job. Heavy like carrying a screaming three-year-old in one arm and a sleeping infant in the other. From the store to the car. At the back of the parking lot. In the rain. And you can’t find your keys.
Some congregations are tough—really tough. But no shepherd ever had a worse flock than Pastor Moses. God himself threatened to give up on them!
